Recent findings show that control mechanisms of energy metabolism and sleep are closely related. We believe that it is important to consider the relationship between sleep and metabolism when evaluating the effects of sleep quality and energy metabolism in the new sleeping pills or supplements.
We are measuring metabolism over a long period of time as a during sleep using a whole room metabolic chamber for energy metabolism measurement, which measures energy metabolism by sampling breath out air without the use of a mask or mouthpiece. We have introduced a magnetic field type mass spectrometer that is 10 times more sensitive and accurately measuring gas concentration in the chamber than the previous standard analyzers, and we have also developed noise reduction algorithm to complete a device that the top level of time resolution in the world. Sleep polysomnography is used to observe and measure brain waves, oxygen saturation, electrocardiograms, respiratory airflow, eye and chin muscle movements, snore, and chest and abdomen movements during sleep in healthy normal subjects as well as in those suspected of having sleep apnea syndrome.
Since the establishment of the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (IIIS), IIIS has been building its organization and conducting research under the "World Premier Research Center Program" of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The IIIS aims to realize a sustainable medical care system that will prevent and overcome major diseases and enable people to enjoy life until the age of 100 without health concerns.
I will establish "Metabolism & Sleep", which integrates two research areas, energy metabolism and sleep medicine. The regulation of energy metabolism and the control of sleep cross-talk regulatory factors. For example, leptin and insulin, which induce satiety, when increase energy metabolism and promote sleep whereas NPY and ghrelin hormones which promote food intake, stimulate orexigenic and promote wakefulness.
I would like to become a researcher who aims to contribute to the improvement of human health by solving of the mechanism and developing treatments for energy metabolism diseases and sleep disorders.
