Biography

Born in 1984 in Hakodate city, Hokkaido. Received a Ph.D. in Science at Tokyo Institute of Technology Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science in 2013. Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, a researcher at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science, and currently an assistant professor and head of the Laboratory for neurophysiology and biophysics at Ochanomizu University.

Research Outline

I study the neurophysiology and biophysics of the brain. Neurophysiology is the part of biology where people study the architecture of the millions of neurons in the brain. Besides neurons, our brain also contains blood vessels, glial cells, gliotransmission, neuromodulator, cerebrospinal fluid, ion concentrations, electric fields, extracellular spaces, and some lipids! A lot of research has been investigating how neurons talk to each other through synapses, but all the other components also have to function and communicate with each other. I think in the healthy brain, all the other cells and molecules are engaged in very sophisticated and dynamic communications. This is what I call “meta-communication in the brain“. And I believe these factors enable us to acquire complex cognitive functions and intelligence. I’m trying to reveal its unknown mechanisms.

What is my goal as a transborder researcher?

Recently, the roles expected of researchers have been varied and inclusive of research and education, outreach activities, and collaboration with companies. I have organized approximately 30 "Research Committees on Business Administration and Brain Science" with the goal of fostering collaboration between managers, researchers, and experts in Japanese culture, resulting in a participation of over 400 individuals. Leveraging this experience, through interdisciplinary research and cross-industry exchange, I aspire to become a researcher who can approach my research from the standpoint of both business management and entrepreneurship, free from the constraints of academia.
